'Midnight Fantasies Upon Prospect Hill' explores uncharted territory, fusing the dreamy grittiness of warped shoegaze guitars with the insistent groove of cosmic lo-fi house music. It's equal parts all-consuming and tantalising.
'Midnight Fantasies Upon Prospect Hill' features Flicker Vertigo's signature wall of sound, this time coming on like a tide rapidly ebbing and flowing, until it finally washes over and consumes you in the crescendo. It's a bold evolution in sound, while also drawing comparisons to the likes of bands like Tame Impala, Melody's Echo Chamber and My Bloody Valentine and to house greats like Moodymann.
Flicker Vertigo is the psychedelic rock brainchild of Nathan Nicholson, with everything written, recorded, mixed and mastered by Nicholson himself. A native of Melbourne, Australia, and currently based in Bournemouth in South Coast UK, Flicker Vertigo is music to daydream to. Bursting with crunchy psychedelic textures, sun-dappled guitar hooks swirling in an explosive wall of sound, blissed-out melodies fluttering overhead, and hypnotic, driving grooves whizzing by, plus subliminal nods to dream pop, garage psych, krautrock, shoegaze and house bubbling upon the horizon and melting into the kaleidoscopic haze. It's a dreamy, cosmic, vertigo-inducing mixture that consumes you and transmits you skyward.
lyrics
Time crawls, it's lonely,
Surreal life grows internally,
Midnight fantasies,
Dreaming of normalcy,
After dark on the run,
Hazy gazing at suburban slums,
If I squint my eyes,
The dappled lights tranquillise
Oh please carry me away on that shooting star,
When it crumbles into dust I'll land somewhere else,
Where I'm free to roam, a glimmer of hope,
Back to reality, just this grassy oasis and me
You and I, we both see,
A city shrouded in mundanity,
But we have this lonely hill,
We'll brave the winter chill,
Slowly ascending,
Suburban twilight, collective grief,
The days just crawl by by by by,
Soundtracked by dissonant sighs
I feel okay if I meditate and gaze til the angst is at bay,
Just focus on the beauty that surrounds you,
I'll escape and pretend it's 1997,
Nostalgic and free with my whole life in front of me
I'll just sit and dream these nights away,
Wake me when it ends,
Paralysed peacefully,
By midnight fantasies
